What is the Necessary Gun Dog Equipment to Train Your Puppy?

DIY Training  |  Golden Retrievers  |  Dog Training Kit

While it is obvious that some dogs are born and bred to be hunting companions out there in the wild, with the proper tools and equipment you can turn practically any pooch into a well performing gun dog. However, if you are truly serious about getting your animal into the gun dog world, then it is a much better idea to start off with a dog that has been bred to be a hunting dog or a retriever, as they will provide you with much better services than a Border Collie would, for example.

So, if you want to get your gun dog to perform as best as possible when out in the field, you will want to make sure that your dog has enough practice fetching and retrieving while he is at home. To do this, it is a great idea to invest in some necessary gun dog equipment. Gun dog equipment that is used for training purposes comes in all shapes and sizes, but is mostly limited to various models and mock ups of prey that the dog would retrieve in the wild. Known commonly as dummies, this type of gun dog equipment will help your dog learn the proper grip necessary for the mouth of a hunting dog as well as allow you to create that beautiful bond between a man and his animal.

Gun dog equipment that is used for training purposes can range from a couple of bucks to nearly astronomical prices. If you are price conscious, then you will want to stick with gun dog equipment that is a bit cheaper, such as a plastic or rubber training dummy that is simply cylindrical in shape. This somewhat mimics the feel of game in your pooch’s mouth and is worthwhile as a basic training tool. On the other hand, if you want to break the bank on gun dog equipment to train your puppy then you can purchase training tools that not only look and fly like a real bird, but also smell and feel like one as well. This gun dog training tool should only be considered however if you have tons of money to burn or want to use your hunting dog professionally.
